" sorry! we have to take a pictures of everyone who comes in.
it turned out nice, though! now, shall we get started? "
---
" hi! it's so great to have you here.
care to introduce yourself? "
Here I'm called Adrian Gold, but what few know is that where I come from I was known as Rumplestiltskin. I'm immortal and ageless (over 300, if you must count) but I'd say I hardly look a day over 50. I'm the mayor of a town called Storybrooke, Maine, currently- the most feared and respected man in town. Back home I was known as The Dark One and was the most feared man in the Enchanted Forest.
" great! so, where are you from,
and when is your birthday? "
I was born on November 13th in the Enchanted Forest. My father died a coward, a fact which was held over my head throughout my childhood and well into adulthood. As a child I never climbed trees, play-fought, performed stunts or acrobatics or any of the other arguably dangerous games other children my age did because I was too afraid of being hurt. So I learned to read and write (rare and valuable skills where I come from), to cook meals, spin wool into thread, to weave... not very masculine pursuits but handy to have.
" so tell me a bit about your personality.
what makes you tick? "
As someone who had been ridiculed and bullied all his life, as soon as I was granted power I learned to appreciate it very much. Power has become more important to me than anything else, so much so that I couldn't let go of it even for my son or for the woman I love. I'm not entirely heartless, though; I arranged for the curse to be cast to bring us all to the Land Without Magic, where my son disappeared those many years ago, to look for him again. Although I have hope of either bringing magic to this world or traveling back to where there is magic once the curse has broken. And it's only a matter of time before that happens, since dear Emma has already arrived in Storybrooke.
I enjoy the art of deal-making, whether it's of the magical, financial or goods and services type. I don't like being double-crossed in deals, which makes me angrier than almost anything else. Now may be a good time to mention I have a bit of an anger problem, and have been known to throw a tantrum when things don't seem fair or just don't go my way.
I appreciate the finer things in life, like great classical or opera music, expensive art and antiques, fine wine, caviar, filet mignon... yet I can still sit down and enjoy a Coke and a burger at Granny's right alongside everyone else.
" wow! i feel like i know you already.
tell me what you've been up to lately. "
I was raised by spinsters who showed me little to no love or attention, so I grew up never really knowing how to love, and having had no strong male role models to teach me what it was to be a man, nor proper parents to show me how to raise a child. Still, I grew up to marry and for a while we were happy. Then I got drafted to fight in the Ogre War, and at first I was glad to go in order to prove myself not a coward as my father was, but once I got there I encountered a seer who said my wife would give birth to a son, and that son would be rendered fatherless by my actions. At first I didn't believe it, but as the prophecy began to come true I was determined not to let it complete. I purposely maimed myself to get out of battle and be sent home. My wife wasn't glad to see me, as she said my son would've been better off if I'd died than coming back a coward. She began frequenting pubs and hanging around a bunch of pirates. I heard she'd been kidnapped by one, but when I went to save her I was again proven a coward when I refused to take up arms to get her back. I raised my son on my own after that, until the army began to recruit little boys near his age to fight in the Ogre Wars. I had to save him from being taken away, so I stole the dagger that was used to control the Dark One, and called him up. I was tricked into using the dagger to kill the Dark One, thus taking his place. With my newfound powers I was able to stop my son from being taken, but became corrupted by the power and started doing evil deeds of my own.
My son wanted his father back, without the powers, but the only way to do away with them would be if I died by the magic dagger which now bears my name. He pled his case with the Blue Fairy, who gave him the last of the magical beans in the land so he might open a portal to a world without magic. My powers wouldn't work there, but I would be alive and with my son, so it sounded like the best option. But at the last minute I decided power was more important to me than my own son, gods help me, and I had to watch as he was whisked away to another world without me, and with no way for me to follow- except! I got the Blue Fairy to admit there may be a way to get there by a curse, which was the beginning of my plot to get us all here and into our current situation.
But along the way I met a man who claimed to have access to a magic bean and made a deal with him with eternal life as the stakes if he could deliver, and I tried to take that shortcut. That was also the time I met the pirate who had taken my Milah again, and challenged him to finish our earlier duel. I was just about to take his heart when Milah reappeared, but she didn't want me back. It turned out she had never really loved me, and indeed had fallen in love with that pirate captain instead. I was so angry I ripped out her heart and crushed it myself, right in front of the man she claimed to love. I then took his hand, which I thought clutched the magic bean, but when I pried it open I found none.
I helped a miller's daughter, Cora, learn to spin straw into gold so she might win the hand of a prince. We fell in love, however, and she made plans to run away with me instead. She had me show her how to take a heart, supposedly so she could rip out the heart of the king, but she took out her own instead so she would have no more feelings for me. Much later I encouraged her daughter, Regina, to push her through a magic mirror into an annoying, nonsensical little world, and attempted to train her daughter in magic, but she was at first too kind-hearted to do the things I asked of her. Her own heart had to be hardened before she was able to do such things as take hearts, herself.
My next experience with love came in the form of a young woman, Belle, with whom I made an arrangement that she would come be a caretaker at my castle indefinitely in exchange for the protection of her kingdom. Over time my heart softened towards her and eventually, despite my best efforts to the contrary, we fell in love. But when I found out she was trying to break my curse with her true love's kiss, I again feared losing my powers and sent her away. I heard later that she had killed herself by jumping from a tower. But she taught me more than anyone else about the power of true love, which sparked me to go about helping several people to find their own.
I was also able to encourage Regina to enact a curse that would send us all to another land before I was captured and placed in the deepest dungeons of Snow White and her Prince Charming's palace. That was where I found out the name of their soon to be born child, the one prophesied to break the curse on her 28th birthday, would be Emma.
When the curse was enacted, shortly after the baby's birth, I was transported to Storybrooke, Maine, along with many other citizens of the Enchanted Forest. But where Regina had expected to be the most powerful person in town, it turned out I was the mayor, although unfortunately she still has a lot of influence as a Councilwoman. If I'd had my druthers she would've been the town drunk, perhaps, or a homeless woman living under the toll bridge. But that's neither here nor there. Whether she knows it or not, I remember everything about my previous life and am actively trying to get the curse broken so I can go look for my son.
" speaking of your family,
tell me about them. "
My father was a coward. I never knew my mother. I was raised by a couple of spinsters. I was married to a beautiful young woman named Milah, who left me for a pirate. I killed her right in front of the pirate she'd left me for. My son, Baelfire, was lost in a magic bean portal and carried to the World Without Magic. I plan to look for him as soon as I'm able; right now, with the curse on, I'm physically unable to leave town.
" okay, this one's between you and me.
got any skeletons in the closet? "
I'm keeping the fact that I retain my memories from Regina, to use to my advantage later on. I'm also keeping the dagger that is the one thing that can kill me hidden away for safe keeping. I don't want anyone to find it and use it against me.
" okay. a little more personal..
are you seeing anyone? "
I'm engaged to Councilwoman Lacey French, who is actually my Belle from long ago. I'd been told that she'd died, but found out she was transported here along with the rest of us and was held in the mental ward underneath the hospital for years. So far she seems to retain no memories of our past together. Helping her to regain those memories is one of my goals.
" well thanks for answering all the questions!
we'll get back to you, okay? "
Don't. publish. this. anywhere. Or I will take your heart and crush it to dust right in front of your eyes.
" alright, one last thing..
sign this waiver, please? "
